Fungi and mycelium

Hi EA and Everyone my question is... What exactly is the purpose and interworkings of fungi/mycelium? Does this affect us? Are fungi their own living organisms or are they an extention of Mother Gaia or something else? Then finally are they indigenous to Earth or put here by someone else? Thank you. ✌ ♥-Kayla
